Early in 2009, while I was engaged in sensitive negotiations with my own source, Pope Benedict XVI set out to tell the true story of Jesus of Nazareth. The former Cardinal, the Vatican informed us, wants to bridge the growing divide between ‘the historic Jesus and the Christ of faith’. While the world waited in eager expectation for the Pope’s world exclusive, I wondered if all the hard work that my contact had undertaken, would be rendered null and void by the definitive story of Jesus of Nazareth by God’s Number One on earth. I needn’t have worried and should have kept faith with my source. Even the Sunday Times declared, rather sombrely, that ‘there is little of the historic Jesus to be found’ in the Pope’s book. We humans are so easily fooled by prestigious titles and grandiose claims.
You wouldn’t expect my source to have the time to write a book, least of all, one about Jesus, but he is, after all, the best qualified – Satan. He had the ideal training and the experience to equip him for the task!
